Serendipity 1967 (2005, 6min, 8mm) A magic camper ride through Colorado in route to Yellowstone National Park circa 1967. An accidental double exposure on a single roll of 8mm film by an unknown filmmaker. Music by Jamal River.
Displacement (2005, 5min, 8mm) A meditation on lost memories through the tail end discards of old 8mm home movies. Sound design by Jennifer Proctor.
Big Screen Version (2004, appropriated cable television, 3min) Split-screen talking heads and flying graphics collide in a musical homage to the self-righteous rhetoric of Fox News.
States of the Union (2003, 6min, appropriated cable television) Two short videos that seek out the essential character of our Presidents from isolation of words and gestures during their respective State of the Union addresses.
Dissolve (2003, 15min, 16mm) Found footage film constructed of hundreds of dissolves taken from old educational films and reassembled to create a meditation on our own impermanence.
Throwing Stones at the Sun (2002, 16mm, 19 min) “27 documentary vignettes form a portrait of the U.S. between 1999-2001. Part traveler, part geographical surveyor, Valdez records moments of quiet resonance that provide insight into how politics, religion, and consumerism form a triumvirate of influence that constructs the American identity.”
Two (2002, 10min, 16mm split-screen) An abandoned and incomplete film performance piece for two film projectors that spiraled out of control and beyond means of execution.
Windowfilm (2001, 12min, 16mm) The final product of a film performance piece where a single 10-second film loop was edited and added to as it ran through the projector.
Lumberman (2001, 3min, 16mm) An early cut-up exercise breaking a linear film into divisors of 24 frames and reassembling randomly. A merger of timber and filmic practice that ultimately needed a little Kermit to revive it.
Hallway (2001, 16mm, 3min) An ascension into a sanitized heaven.
TV Election (2000, silent, color, 3min) 8 hours of election coverage reduced to 3 minutes. In-camera edited on a single roll of film.
Variations on Cannonball (1999, sound, bw, 3min) A study of repetition and variation in an apartment swimming pool. Filmed with a Eumig Underwater camera. In-camera edited on a single roll of film.
The Film (1998, 10min, 16mm) I have called this film many things over the years. It was the first found footage film I made from material retrieved from garbage cans and dumpsters. I edited it with tape and scissors, holding the film up to the light to cut. It was the basis for Dissolve.
Still Moving (1998, silent, bw, 3min) Stop motion zoom into the minute details of the city. In-camera edited on a single roll of film.
Silent Sketches (1998, silent, bw, 5min) Capturing moments of daily life. Filmed in Austin, Texas and parts of East and West Texas. *optional music has been added.
Marathon, Texas (1996, sound, bw, 3min) A small town just outside of Big Bend National Park where my great-grandfather lived.
